San Vito, lovingly set down on its hill

There are villages we visit, perhaps when we go on holiday or on a day trip.
And then there are villages that, the moment you look at them, make you stop.

San Vito Romano is one of them.

Perhaps it is so beautiful because it was not born by chance. Perhaps, in a time we cannot tell of, divine hands, wise and artistic, gently gathered its houses, accompanied by angels, and set it down right here: on top of this hill, among the Monti Prenestini, with its gaze open over the valleys and the sky close by.

They placed the Castle on the rock like a keeper.
They gathered the houses one beside the other, like families huddled around their own story.
They drew streets, alleys, arches, churches, terraces and vegetable gardens, so that every stone could tell of the toil, the faith and the love of those who came before us.

And today we can still admire it like this: suspended between earth and sky, ancient and alive, fragile and wonderful.

This photo-art piece is not meant to be just a beautiful image. It is an invitation to look at San Vito with new eyes: not as something to take for granted, but as a gift received and a responsibility entrusted to our hands.

If divine hands truly brought it here, then it is up to us to look after it: to respect its places, to tell its memory, to tend its wounds and to imagine its future.

Because San Vito is not just the village where we live.
It is the village that lives within us.

We passed this way.
We received this land.
It was not ours alone.
We have looked after it for you too, who will come after us.
