Under the shade that was no longer there

Under the shade that was no longer there

This is not a photograph of the past.
It is an image of memory, of longing and of hope.

In this little square, near the Arco dell’Ospitale, Giancarlo remembers the many small tables, the card games, the voices, the laughter and that simple conviviality that made everyone feel part of the same village.

Grandpa Giovanni’s tavern was no longer there. And with it, in a sense, the great pergola of pizzutello grapes had disappeared too: on summer days it offered shade, coolness and the taste of our land.

Those grapes, in this reconstruction, we put back ourselves.

Not to pretend that time has not passed, but to find again a scent, a memory, a way of being together.

Under that imagined pergola the cards return, for briscola, tresette or other games, along with a glass of wine, a greeting to whoever walks by, heated but honest discussions, and the company that made summer evenings feel lighter.

Perhaps we cannot bring Grandpa Giovanni’s tavern back.
But we can carry forward what it stood for: closeness, hospitality, respect, the wish to meet without hurry.

May this new season of life bring all of us a little of that good shade:
a shared table, a kind word, a laugh among friends, a bunch of grapes, a game of cards and the hope of a village able to come together again.

And a thought goes to those who chose to renew this civic square, San Vito Lovers, without seeking applause or money, but by offering a free space for everyone’s photographs, memories and stories.

To those who understood that a photo is not only for looking at how we were, but also for recognising ourselves, understanding what we can become and imagining together where we want to go.

Because a village does not live only in its walls, its arches and its streets: it lives in the people who know how to bring memory, ideas and hope together.

Buona Vita, San Vito Lovers. May the future taste of our roots, carry the good shade of conviviality and the open gaze of those who still believe in their community.
