La Fonte Canale is one of the most underrated places in San Vito Romano, yet also one of the most beautiful. It lies on Via Santa Maria De Mattias and offers glimpses of the village, which lights up in the evening.
For generations it was a fixture of daily life: in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, when there were no washing machines or tumble dryers, this is where people came to wash their clothes. A public wash house once stood here; today the same spot is home to Intruglio Lab.
In the ’80s and ’90s, La Fonte Canale was also a hangout for the village’s young people, who came here to eat watermelon and swap jokes until late at night.
If you have memories of this place, or perhaps some photos of the former wash house, share them with the San Vito Romano Lovers community on Facebook.
