Monte Livata

Where it is

Monte Livata is a medium-altitude mountain (1,429 m) in the Monti Simbruini range, within the municipality of Subiaco, about fifteen kilometres from the town centre. Known as “Rome’s mountain”, at 78 kilometres from the capital it is home to the only ski resort in the Province of Rome. It is about 33 km from San Vito Romano, roughly a 45-minute drive. The area, covering roughly 3,000 hectares, lies entirely within the Monti Simbruini Regional Nature Park and is surrounded by extensive beech forests, with a characteristic karst landscape where buffalo, horses and cattle graze.

The area is divided into three main zones: La Bandita (1,350-1,425 m), the most developed hub with restaurants, hotels, sports facilities, a bike park and a rail-based sledding attraction; Campo dell’Osso (1,560 m), an intermediate area with private residences, the starting point for trails to mountain sanctuaries and for cross-country skiing loops towards Vallepietra; and Monna dell’Orso (1,618-1,758 m), the highest zone, reached by the four-seat chairlift opened in 2013, where the downhill ski slopes, ski school and equipment rentals are located.

After decades of decline, caused by competition from resorts in Abruzzo and by infrastructure limits, Monte Livata experienced a revival thanks to the Monna dell’Orso chairlift, which brought alpine skiing back to six slopes, alongside moving walkways for snowboarding and a snowtubing area at Fossa dell’Acero. In summer the mountain becomes a destination for hiking, with trails climbing towards Monte Calvo and Monte Autore and leading to the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity, and for cycling: the climb from Subiaco, nearly 19 km with 1,200 metres of elevation gain and an average gradient of 6%, was a stage of the 1975 Tirreno-Adriatico, won by Italo Zilioli.

Opening hours and contacts

The mountain, the trails and the beech woods are always accessible. The lifts and facilities, on the other hand, do not have fixed year-round hours: openings depend on the season and on the snow, and the current status of each facility is published on the livata.it website.

Useful contacts:

Before setting off, especially in winter, it is best to check whether the lifts are open and what the road conditions are.
