Hadrian's Villa

Where it is

On the outskirts of Tivoli, not far from Villa d’Este and about an hour’s drive from San Vito Romano, lies Hadrian’s Villa, the largest and most lavish residence ever built by a Roman emperor. It was Hadrian himself who commissioned it between 118 and 138 AD and personally oversaw its design, drawing inspiration from the most striking places and buildings he had seen during his long journeys across the empire.

Spread over some 120 hectares, the complex included palaces, baths, libraries, theatres and nymphaea, linked by an elaborate system of underground galleries that allowed slaves and servants to move around unseen. Among the best-preserved structures are the Maritime Theatre, a miniature residence on a circular island conceived as the emperor’s personal retreat, the Pecile, a huge porticoed garden modeled on the famous Stoa of Athens, and the Canopus, a long water basin lined with colonnades and statues that evoked the Egyptian city of the same name on the Nile delta.

After Hadrian’s death the villa continued to be used by his successors, but with the decline of the empire it gradually fell into neglect, becoming over the centuries a quarry for marble and building materials, as well as an inexhaustible source of finds that today enrich museums around the world, from the Louvre to the Vatican Museums. Rediscovered by Renaissance humanists, who drew inspiration from it for many architectural and decorative works, the villa was the subject of the first systematic excavations in the 18th century.

Since 1999 Hadrian’s Villa has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a unique testimony to the cultures of the ancient world that the emperor sought to bring together in a single place, and it is today one of the most visited archaeological sites in Lazio.
